The individual tends relationships. Relationships sustain the ecosystem. The ecosystem makes communal hope possible.

What you'll learn to see differently

Understand what is happening within your community, and what you might do about it.

  1. 01

Recognize the difference between a crowd and a community.

A group can share a location, identity, or mission without developing the trust and mutual responsibility that make a community thrive.

  2. 02

Notice when a healthy community begins to turn inward.

Learn the early signs: loyalty prized over honesty, questions treated as threats, and members who stay because leaving has been made hard.

  3. 03

Understand why good intentions aren't always enough.

Shared values and hopeful words matter, but lasting change requires decisions, habits, and collective action that reflect those values.

  4. 04

Find your role in keeping a community alive.

Explore practical ways to strengthen relationships, share responsibility, respond to real needs, and help communities become more resilient.

The goal isn't to make every community perfect. It's to help you understand what is happening within yours, and what you might do about it.

Who is this book for?

  • People who want to build stronger relationships and a greater sense of belonging.
  • Nonprofit leaders and volunteers trying to keep their mission at the center of their work.
  • Faith and interfaith communities seeking to translate shared values into meaningful action.
  • Community organizers and neighborhood groups working across differences.
  • Anyone who has watched a once-vibrant community lose its sense of purpose and wondered why.

Inside the book

Healthy communities don't just happen. They are built, tended, and protected.

Eight chapters move from seeing your communities clearly, to recognizing what makes or breaks them, to the everyday practice of keeping them alive.

1

Understand the ecosystem

CHAPTER 1

Community

A community is not a building, a border, or a membership card. It is a living system.

CHAPTER 2

The Constellation

We belong to many communities, and our time is finite. The quality of our life is often the quality of our connections.

CHAPTER 3

The Community Inside You

Every community you've belonged to built rooms inside you. Some you chose. Some you inherited.

CHAPTER 4

Hope

Hope is contagious when it's active, not passive.

2

Recognize what makes or breaks it

CHAPTER 5

Communal Hope

When hope is shared and lived out, a community becomes a force for good.

CHAPTER 6

When the Ecosystem Turns

Drift happens slowly. Pay attention early.

CHAPTER 7

When the Ecosystem Breaks

Not every institution can be repaired. You can still repair yourself, and go back for the ones who haven't left yet.

3

Tend it every day

CHAPTER 8

How to Tend Your Ecosystem

Show up genuinely, strengthen relationships, share responsibility and power, and act on real community needs. Tending is not a one-time event. It's a daily choice.

An idea from Communal Hope

Hope becomes more powerful when a community learns to act on it.

A community doesn't become resilient simply because its members believe in a better future. Resilience grows when that belief influences how people make decisions, respond to setbacks, care for vulnerable members, and share responsibility.

"That is communal hope at its most fundamental. Not hope as a feeling. Hope as a permanent alteration of what becomes possible for a human life."
From Chapter 5, Communal Hope
Communal Hope at a glance: a hand-drawn map of all eight chapters, core truths, and the continuous cycle of awareness, connection, active hope, resilience, and tending

Five truths at the heart of the book

  • We are wired for connection.
  • Presence is the primary currency of community.
  • Hope grows when it is shared.
  • Healthy communities are built, tended, and protected.
  • Every community can produce a crowd. Not every crowd produces a community.

About the author

Mustafa Bahar

Mustafa Bahar has spent nearly twenty years inside community life. He was part of the early team at a new school in a struggling district that earned the state’s highest academic rating in its first year. He has served on the board of the Arizona Faith Network and organized workshops, panels, and interfaith gatherings across Arizona. Along the way he kept seeing the same pattern. Communities form easily and fade quietly, and almost no one is taught how to tend them.

He has since started building some of the tools he wished existed: HeatGuard, an app for staying safe in extreme heat as individuals and as communities; Mithaq, a pre-marriage tool for Muslim couples; and PUPA, a character-development program for young people. Through Ply Consulting, he helps nonprofits and faith organizations with their digital work.

Communal Hope, the first book in The Tending Series, is his attempt to put into words what he has learned so far. He lives in Arizona with his wife and son.

Three questions to sit with

  1. 1Which community has given you more than you've acknowledged?
  2. 2What does your ecosystem need from you right now?
  3. 3What do you hope your future self will have done?
